Chapter 16

For her part, Madison just looked annoyed.

“I swear,” she said, her voice an exasperated grunt through her teeth. “I know how to handle these things safely.”

The clinic was a small place that was decorated too cheerfully for what it was, cute little plants and soft colors, watercolor paintings on the walls. I’d just about shoved my way through everything to get to the room Madison was in, and my throat felt tight when I saw her with one arm wrapped in bandages.

“Madison,” I said, my voice crackling, as I sat down next to her. “What happened?”

“Someone got a little careless with machinery,” Doctor Harwood’s voice said, as he came into the room behind me, a man in his sixties with a small gray beard and round glasses, who walked with his hands clasped behind his back. “Just because she’s used it a million times—and ended up in here a million times, I’ll have you know.”

Madison looked out the window. “It’s just a wrist sprain and some bad cuts. I was putting the last thing on, and of course, that’s when it collapsed.”

I wrung my hands in my lap. “Are you okay?” I turned back to the doctor. “Never mind. She’ll never admit to being hurt. Is she okay?”

“I’m perfectly fine,” she said, the sharp edge in her voice more like she was trying to convince herself. Maybe the doctor.

“She’ll make a full recovery, very little risk of complications,” he said. “But try to keep her from doing anything hasty for me, will you, Paige? The girl doesn’t know how to keep herself in line.”

Ugh, I was going to be sick. I turned back to Madison with my heart in my throat. “It’s my fault, isn’t it?” I said, my voice small. “I probably put something together wrong—”

She looked away. “I was telling you what to do. There’s no use blaming anyone.”

“Oh, god, that means it was my fault.” I shifted the seat closer to her. “Madison, I’m so—”

“Spare me the commentary,” she sighed.

“Make sure you’re not doing anything too strenuous with that arm for a while,” Doctor Harwood said, and then he turned to me. “Oh, I’ll have better luck telling you. Make sure she’s not doing anything too strenuous with that arm.”

“I will,” I said, voice shaky. “I’m going to take care of her.”

“I’ll be good this time,” Madison grunted. “I’ll get plenty of rest. I’d feel bad if I worried Paige.”

Somehow, it was only when she said that when I realized we’d had quite a bit of work planned for her tomorrow. My stomach turned as I looked back to her. “Wait—Madison—”

“It’s really fine,” she said. “Don’t worry about it. I’m going to rest. Mind giving us a minute, Doc?”

Doctor Harwood put his hands up. “You know she has a problem when she’s gotten too comfortable being here. Take your time, Madison. Just don’t do anything too hasty.”

He’d barely left the room and shut the door before Madison did something too hasty. Without a word, she swept
